Rural poverty approaches, policies & strategies in Sierra Leone

The government gives high priority to the restoration of agriculture and other economic activities in rural areas. The Government’s Poverty Reduction Strategy, 2005-2007 provides a comprehensive framework for reducing poverty by:

  • achieving economic growth
  • improving food security
  • increasing job opportunities
  • providing better basic social services and effective social safety nets for poor and vulnerable people

The national strategy addresses three main development priorities:

  • good governance, security and peace-building
  • pro-poor sustainable growth to promote food security and create jobs
  • human development through microfinance

The strategy builds on medium-term post-war strategies for rural and agricultural development that focused on improving household food security and creating opportunities for income-generating activities. Those strategies included expansion of the area under rice cultivation, restocking the country’s livestock population, restructuring delivery services and rehabilitating rural infrastructure.
