Rural poverty approaches, policies and strategies in Tanzania Since independence, the policy of the Government of Tanzania has been to pursue egalitarianism and self-reliance. Over recent decades, that policy has evolved to include an increased focus on poverty reduction, as evidenced in the country's poverty reduction strategy and Vision for 2025. Working towards its long-term objectives, the government has completed an agriculture sector development strategy paper and a rural development strategy paper as vehicles for implementing poverty reduction plans and programmes. The strategies have the primary objectives of stimulating growth in the rural economy by building on gains in the national economy and by empowering rural poor people to overcome poverty through better access to land, water, financial resources and markets. The government's agricultural strategy has a focus on crop and livestock production and related agribusiness activities. The rural development strategy addresses development of the overall rural economy, including infrastructure, governance and capacity-building, to help harmonize sector policies and integrate them into strategic actions.
