Rural poverty approaches, policies and strategies in Tonga

The Government of Tonga implements a poverty reduction strategy that focuses on lending through the Tonga Development Bank. The Tonga Development Bank was established in 1977 as a development banking institution to finance projects in all sectors including agriculture, small business and industry. The bank extends credit to foster income-generating opportunities, especially among small-scale farmers and fishers. Credit schemes help borrowers diversify their production and strengthen their capacity to produce cash crops.
