Rural poverty approaches, policies & strategies in Zambia

Zambia's poverty reduction strategy includes investments in key economic sectors, with a special focus on agricultural and rural development. It also proposes to integrate policies related to HIV/AIDS, gender and protection of the environment into all rural poverty reduction initiatives and across the main sectors of the economy. The main elements of the strategy include:

  • improving rural infrastructure
  • creating rural employment opportunities through promotion of large-scale enterprises
  • strengthening the linkage of small farmers to commercial producers and agribusinesses
  • stimulating small-scale rural enterprises
  • helping poor rural people improve food production techniques
  • strengthening social services in education, health and sanitation

The country's poverty reduction strategy for agriculture is complemented by a national agricultural policy. The policy and strategic framework for the livestock subsector gives priority to controlling epidemic livestock diseases, as well as restocking and increasing overall livestock production.
