Rural poverty approaches, policies & strategies in Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwe United Nations Development Assistance Framework (ZUNDAF) was launched in 2007, the result of collaboration between the Government of Zimbabwe and UN agencies and the Bretton Wood institutions. Proposed development initiatives focus on humanitarian issues to facilitate recovery and reduce poverty, especially among the most vulnerable people. The framework highlights six priority areas:

  • mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS and providing support for people who are infected
  • enhancing national capacity and ownership of development processes to promote broad-based economic growth and reduce poverty and hunger
  • strengthening mechanisms for promoting good governance and protection of human rights
  • reducing the negative social, economic, political, cultural and religious practices that sustain gender inequality
  • improving access to basic social services
  • improving food security and the sustainable management of natural resources and the environment

The government has launched a short-term, targeted farming programme to address the urgent problems of food insecurity and poor productivity. Under the programme it provides support to priority target farmers for immediate and enhanced food production.
