The world, where one needs not fear the simplest of diseases and destitution that follows. The world, where all children are learning in schools, giving that precious beacon of hope to every parent.

Schoolgirls in Bhutan: going to school, realizing their dreams

It’s 7 a.m. in Thimphu, and the weekday rush has begun. At this hour it’s not vehicles that crowd the streets of the kingdom’s capital, but students. Scores of young children and teenagers - all in school uniforms - are heading to their classes in the city’s primary and secondary schools.

School shortage forces pupils to leave home

Chandra, 9, Tika, 8, and Lela, 7, are sisters attending Beteni Community School in the district of Tsirang in south-central Bhutan. Because their home is a 6-hour walk from the school, their father, a farmer, has built a small hut for them to live in during the week. The hut is near the school and is made of mud and sticks, with an iron sheet as the roof.

Promoting education in Bhutan

Bhutan is a tiny landlocked country. The government knows that, with a small population, the success of building the country's economy lies in educating its future workforce. As such, education is a national priority and the government is committed to making education available to every school-aged child -- a daunting task in a country that suffers a shortage of teachers, despite government incentives.
