Carla's story: getting off the street and back into school

Carla, 11, is a cheerful and talkative fourth grader who attends the 6 de Junio school. Carla feels fortunate to be able to go to school – just a year ago she was working all day selling cigarettes and candy in the streets and bars of El Alto.

Canada helps Bolivian mothers with health care

Canadian support to a UNICEF project in Bolivia is helping to reduce the highest maternal mortality rates in Latin America - 390 deaths per 100,000 births. And the number of deaths run still higher in rural and high mountain areas.

Reducing poverty through scholarships

As one of six children, 24-year-old Richard Agramont from the rural town of Machacamarca never dreamed he would be able to attend university. But thanks to a USAID scholarship program, he is now a fourth-year student at Bolivia’s University of Carmen Pampa. For students in the La Paz region who face many barriers to higher education, these scholarships offer them a whole new world.
