Strategic partnerships breathe life and hope into an impoverished community in Brazil

In the semi-arid northeast of Brazil, the IFAD-supported Dom Helder Camara project works with local governments, farmers’ organizations, civil society associations and state companies to improve poor people’s living conditions. Together they have brought safe water to communities, opened new markets for their farm products, trained young people and adults, and helped women obtain identity documents.

Water for rural communities in drought-prone North-east Brazil

In North-east Brazil, Oxfam helps small-scale farmers to make a living in what is a harsh and drought-prone region. Ensuring access to a safe water supply is the top priority and Oxfam is working in partnership with other organisations on an innovative project to build one million cisterns to collect rainwater in this region.

Brazil: speaking out against violence through hip hop

Janaina Oliveira is a young woman from a poor neighbourhood in one of Rio de Janeiro's suburbs with an alarmingly high rate of violence against women and girls. She is not only an advocate against violence, she is also a rapper. She belongs to a group of women who are part of a project called Minas da Rima (Girls of Rhyme), supported by the UNIFEM Trust Fund to Eliminate Violence Against Women.

Com 3 milhões de hectares de terras indígenas e uma população extrativista (de índios, seringueiros e pequenos agricultores) de mais de 5 mil pessoas, uma das áreas mais importantes da Floresta Amazônica — o noroeste do Mato Grosso — sofre com a exploração do garimpo, da madeira e da pecuária. Essa pressão gera conflitos, muitas vezes armados, entre os membros das comunidades, que se vêem divididos entre obter renda com as atividades exploratórias ou preservar a biodiversidade.

Curso para empresa ajuda ação social no MS

Um programa do SEBRAE (Serviço de Apoio às Micro e Pequenas Empresas) tem intensificado e ampliado as ações sociais das empresas instaladas em Dourados, no Mato Grosso do Sul. Os cursos do EMPRETEC (Programa de Desenvolvimento de Empreendedores), que já formaram mais de 300 empresários na cidade, ajudam a estreitar os contatos entre a iniciativa privada e as organizações não-governamentais.
