Remittances: spreading the benefits in El Salvador

For generations, poor people around the world have left their homes to seek better wages abroad. Today, the money they send home totals an estimated US$200 billion a year. In Latin America, remittances are worth more than direct foreign investment, official development assistance and foreign aid combined. They have a huge potential to reduce rural poverty. With this in mind, IFAD is exploring ways to lower the transaction costs of sending money home and is working with governments to make sure the money is used productively.

UNICEF ‘mini-reporters' help launch anti-violence campaign in El Salvador

No one is better qualified to report on children’s issues than children themselves. This was the idea behind the UNICEF-supported ‘mini-reporters’ news show in El Salvador, a pilot created to showcase children’s points of view on issues they face.

Better coffee yields social gains

The Ciudad Barrios Cooperative, in the Cacahuatique mountains of eastern El Salvador, was founded in the late 1970’s and boasts more than 1000 participating members. The cooperative produces approximately 8.5 million pounds of coffee annually. Until 2003, all their coffee was sold as low-priced, generic coffee.
