Fishermen's futures

The Arabian Sea is one of the world’s richest fisheries, yet until recently fishermen living along its coast in Yemen remained desperately poor. This short video looks at how an IFAD-supported project helped transform poor fishermen into successful fish exporters, who now sell their catch to buyers from Saudi Arabia, Japan and Europe.

Yemen and malaria: scaling up malaria prevention

Due to a serious recession in the 1990s, following the first Gulf war and the forced return of close to 1 million workers from Saudi Arabia, all malaria vector control activities had been discontinued in Yemen, leading up to an important increase in malaria cases. With a $12 million grant approved in Round 2, Yemen now fights back.

Promoting girls' education in Yemen

Getting access to education - even a primary school education – is one of the biggest challenges facing children in Yemen today, especially girls. Nearly half of primary school age girls do not go to school. Two out of three women in Yemen are illiterate.

Legitimising micro-credit in Hadramout

Oxfam has been running a livelihoods programme in Sayoun for the last eight months. One of the main components of the programme is the provision of small loans for women in the districts of Seyoun and Sah through our partner organisations Al Ghorfa and Al Irtiqa.
