IFAD in Latin America and the Caribbean IFAD's Latin America and the Caribbean region includes the countries of Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Christopher and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela. IFAD in Mexico and Central America Together with partners and donors, IFAD works with governments in Mexico and Central America to help rural poor people improve their productivity and incomes. Programmes and projects work to provide them with access to technology and basic financial services, and reduce their vulnerability to natural disasters and other threats to their livelihoods. IFAD activities in the region have a special focus on women and gender mainstreaming, and support indigenous peoples and ethnic minorities. Since 1978, IFAD has provided Mexico with funding for seven projects for a total of US$152.4 million. In Central America, IFAD has invested a total of US$641 million in 49 projects and programmes in eight countries. Currently, IFAD-funded projects are helping rural poor people in Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama. IFAD also funds a programme that aims to improve the technical capacity of local organizations to support rural investment projects in Central America, Mexico and Panama. IFAD in the Caribbean Together with partners and donors, IFAD works with governments in the Caribbean region to strengthen the capacity of rural poor people and their organizations, with the objective of improving productivity and incomes. Programmes and projects aim to provide rural poor people with access to technology and basic financial services. Since 1978, IFAD has financed 24 projects and programmes in eight countries in the region, for a total commitment of US$185.0 million. IFAD in South America IFAD funds rural and agricultural development projects, working with governments and other partners and donors to invest in innovative rural financial services, small rural businesses and technology for small farmers. Projects also help develop the local market for technical assistance services for farmers. Improving access to land and property rights is a key aim of IFAD-funded projects in South America, which focus on women and gender mainstreaming and support indigenous communities and ethnic minorities. Since 1978, IFAD has financed 55 projects and programmes in 12 countries in the region, for a total commitment of US$696.3 million. IFAD invests in ongoing projects and programmes in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela. Read more:
