IFAD in Bhutan

Since 1981 IFAD has approved a total of US$42.4 million for investments in six programmes and projects in Bhutan. One programme is ongoing. IFAD has concentrated its operations in the eastern part of the country, which has a relatively dense population. It is also the area where food insecurity is highest. The programmes and projects are part of IFAD’s long-term effort to support the government in empowering poor rural people to achieve greater food security and higher incomes, while ensuring environmental sustainability. Support focuses on the development of economic capital, especially rural infrastructure.

IFAD’s strategy in Bhutan

Building on previous experience, IFAD ensures that operations include attention to:

  • participatory planning
  • gender
  • marketing and enterprise development
  • rural financial services
  • rural infrastructure
  • management and coordination

To improve poor rural people’s livelihoods, operations include activities designed to:

  • develop skills
  • build the capacity of support services
  • strengthen decentralized institutions at the local and grass-roots level
  • initiate pilot activities that can be replicated on a nationwide scale, such as development of district transport master plans and establishment of an effective marketing information service
